Most people who visit Gran Canaria love to visit local markets so here's our guide to all the regular markets in Mogán, Arguineguín and Puerto Rico.

Complete guide to Arguineguín markets

The big weekly market in Arguineguín is held every Tuesday from 08.00 to 14.00 in the Plaza Negra and surrounding streets at the east end of the town. It consists of hundreds of stands selling everything from fresh local produce and handicrafts to food, clothes and jewellery. At the same time, there's a craft market in the Plaza de las Marañuelas just behind the marina and the main Las Marañuelas beach in Arguineguín.

Between October and March, there is also a market in the Ancora Shopping Centre selling clothes, bric-a-brac and local produce. It runs between 08.30 and 14.30.

On Saturdays, there's a flea market in the Plaza de las Marañuelas behind the marina between 08.30 and 14.30.

Complete guide to Mogán markets

The big Friday market along the harbour wall at Puerto de Mogán runs from 08.30 to 14.30. Most stalls are the same as the Tuesday market in Arguineguín and the Sunday market in San Fernando and sell everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to local crafts.

On Mondays, Puerto de Mogán hosts a local craft market in the plaza behind the beach. 08.30 to 14.30.

Complete guide to Puerto Rico markets

On alternate Sundays, Puerto Rico has a farmer's market in the park area between the big shopping centre and the GC 500 road in the Parque Urbano. It's the same market as you find in San Fernando (around the main market building as of January 2019) on the other Sundays.

Puerto Rico also hosts a craft market every Monday evening in the same spot between October and March. 17.000 to 22.30.

Anfi del Mar evening market

Anfi hosts a small evening market every day just in front of the restaurants facing the island. It's small, but the stalls sell quality local crafts and jewellery.

Tip of the day

  • The Parafarmacia In Gran Canaria Is Not A Chemist!
The Parafarmacia In Gran Canaria Is Not A Chemist!

If there is one thing we hate it is visitors being tricked in Gran Canaria. In the past we've warned about overcharging at Gran Canaria chemists, and rip off electronics shops in resorts.

In this Tip Of The Day we return to the island's chemists or rather, to the island's fake chemists.

A chemist in Gran Canaria is called a Farmacia and always has a green cross sign. Farmacias are the only place tobuy medicine in Spain, even basics like paracetamol.

However, there is another kind of shop in Gran Canaria that looks and sounds like a chemist but doesn't sell medicine. This is the Parafarmacia and it also uses a green cross sign.

A parafarmacia is a herbal medicine shop that is not allowed to sell any normal medicine such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or antibiotics.

Instead, parafarmacias sell herbal alternatives to medicine but don't have to prove that they work and they can charge whatever they want.

We recently heard from a visitor to Gran Canaria who went into a parafarmacia and was charged 40 euros for a herbal alternative to Ibuprofen. It was only when they read the label that they realised what had happened.

To locate a genuine farmacia, see this website and search within your municipio (Puerto Rico is in Mogán, Playa del Inglés is in San Bartolomé de Tirajana). At weekends and on fiesta days many farmacias close but there is always one open, known as the farmacia de guardia, in each municipio.
