The heat and dusty air rolls in from North Africa and peaks on Wednesday and Thursday.
By Friday it will fade and the Trade Winds will bring cooler air and relief. Because this hot air is rising fast it is dragging humid tropical air up from West Africa. There is a small chance of rain and even storms in south Gran Canaria and Tenerife over the next few days.
Standard advice for heat alerts are in force: Please drink plenty of water and avoid direct sunshine during the heat of the day. Don't go walking in the mountains until this hot patch of weather has faded.
We advise spending as much time as possible up to the neck in water with one hand exposed to the heat (to hold a cold drink).
