Gran Canaria Tip: Where Does The Best Cocktails?

Where does the best cocktails in Gran Canaria? Where does the best cocktails in Gran Canaria? Photos Gran Canaria

We asked over 100,000 people in our Gran Canaria Facebook Page and Facebook group for the best place to get a good cocktail in Gran Canaria and this is what they said. The best cocktails in Gran Canaria are...

Actually, first, we need to define what we mean by a good cocktail because there are strong cocktails, big cocktails and good cocktails and they don't always come in the same glass.

When it comes to the best-made and most original cocktails on the island, there really is only one place you need to know about.

The Atelier Cocktail Bar in Playa del Inglés

atelier rooftopThe Atelier Cocktail Bar is without any doubt the leading quality cocktail bar in Gran Canaria. The drinks here are made by mixologists using top quality spirits and locally-sourced ingredients and each one is a balanced marvel.

Set on the eighth-floor terrace of the smart Bohemia Suites & Spa hotel on Avenida Estados Unidos 28, the Atelier has panoramic views of the resort and the Maspalomas dunes.

It opens to the public every day with access to the rooftop via a lift. See the cocktail menu here

The Atelier isn't cheap (cocktails for around 10 euros each) by Gran Canaria standards but you are paying for the best drinks on the island and a view to die for.

The best south Gran Canaria cocktail is your favourite one

Taste Meson wine smallWhen we asked Gran Canaria fans about their favourite cocktail we got a huge range of answers and not that much consensus (except for the fact that the very best ones are at the Atelier). It appears that there isn't a lot to choose from between the cocktails served at most Gran Canaria bars. They are big, bright and strong and that's what people like when they are on holiday.

Having said that, the drinks at The Tipsy Hammock down on the strip in front of Playa del Inglés beach got a good few thumbs up, especially the fruity daiquiris.

Lots of recommendations too for the Havana Bar at Anfi del Mar and Bar Diamonds in the Yumbo.

If wine is more your thing than big cocktails, head to Taste Mesón in Arguineguín for 300 wines all served by the glass.

Good cocktails in Las Palmas city

cocktail smallIf you're in Las Palmas, the hipster-inspired giant gin and tonic boom is still going strong so you'll get a good choice in most places.

Head to El Tendedero de Catalina for good gin and tonics and well-made mojitos; you also get a great view of Santa Catalina Square from its rooftop terrace on top of the Bed and Chic Hotel.

Or go to the El Mono Malvado in Plaza Farray for a good range of well-made cocktails.

El Viajero Gin & Vodka Club bar by Plaza Fray Junipero and it's sister bar Ginger at the north tip of Las Canteras beach both do excellent cocktails and GnTs.

In old town Vegueta, La Azotea de Benito makes them big and bold and has great views of the rooftops from its huge terrace. Try a rum and coke with their cherry bitters!

If you find a great Gran Canaria cocktail spot, let us know in the Facebook group. We'll test it and add the best places.

  • Exchange Money In Gran Canaria Or At Home?
Exchange Money In Gran Canaria Or At Home?

Visitors to Gran Canaria often ask whether it is better to exchange their local currency for euros at home or in Gran Canaria.

The answer is that it is almost always better to buy your euros at home than it is to bring pounds to Gran Canaria and use local banks or currency exchanges. This rule of thumb applies all over the world. A currency is almost always cheaper the further away you are from the place you can spend it (because demand for it is lower).

Exchange rates are almost always better at home than in Gran Canaria

You are very likely to get a better exchange rate using a British currency exchange specialist or local bank. Many of these companies will deliver your euros to your home.

One of the best rates in the UK is often from the post office, especially if you do it well in advance.

The only way you'll get a better rate in Gran Canaria than at home is if the exchange rate changes while you are travelling and this is rare.

You also have to bear in mind that currency exchanges in Gran Canaria are getting rarer and some local banks don't exchange money for non-clients.

To Transfer large amouynts of money to Gran Canaria, or to make regular transfers, always use a reputable currency broker such as Currencies Direct. This will save you money on exchange rates and bank charges and is highky secure.

The risk of bringing cash to Gran Canaria

Another important factor to consider is the risk of bringing cash to Gran Canaria: If it is lost or stolen, there is no way of getting it back.

It is much safer to bring a debit or credit card and use local bank ATMs to take out money. These days, a good option is a pre-charged debit card.

Cards may be slightly more expensive that carrying cash, unless you seek out a bank card with low commissions, but it is much more secure.

Bank ATMs like Bankia, Santander and BBVA often charge lower rates than the ATMs in shopping centres and busy tourist areas.

Alex Says: Always select the Euro option at ATMs in Gran Canaria because the exchange rate is much better than if you opt for the Local Currency option. The same applies when you pay by card in shops and restaurants.
